The Pepsi Cola Company была основана фармацевтом из Северной Каролины Калебом Брэдемом, который, как и многие другие предприниматели, пытался создать напиток, похожий на Coca-Cola, к концу XIX века хорошо продававшийся уже во всех штатах. Наиболее удачную версию, состоящую из газированной воды, сахарного сиропа, ванили, эфирных масел, ореха кола и других ароматизаторов, он назвал «Пепси-кола» (датой рождения напитка считается 28 августа 1898 года). Подражая The Coca-Cola Company, он начал продавать концентрат своего напитка торговцам газированной водой.
